Our History

Academy of Osteopathic Medicine

In 1938 there was a privately owned osteopathic hospital at 325 W. Second Street in Dayton, Ohio.  It was a large old home with approximately 10 beds and a surgery unit on the second floor. It was owned by three D.O.’s: Dr. Frank Dilatush, Dr. Herb Dill and Dr. William Gravitt. From this we now have the Dayton District Academy of Osteopathic Medicine which was started over 75 years ago.

In 1941 the Academy met and decided something had to be done about obtaining a larger hospital. Where there had been only one surgeon, now there were several, and a larger facility was needed for this. A fund drive was decided upon and doors were knocked on, arms were twisted, and enough money was raised to build a 50-bed hospital. The hospital got its name “Grandview” from a name submitted by Mrs. Robert Taylor, the wife of a D.O. Had it not been for those first D.O.’s, the Academy would not exist. We ask you to continue this tradition and consider joining the Dayton District Academy of Osteopathic Medicine and become a part of our “osteopathic” family.

As an Osteopathic physician your concerns and interests in the profession can be better focused through the Dayton Academy.
